Thanks to all our new friends who came out to say "hi" during Behnke's Dog Days of August event yesterday! For a first time event, we thought it was pretty successful. It was great meeting so many of Fidos for Freedom therapy dogs! It was also fun to meet rescued Greyhounds from Greyt Expectations, Dalmatians from Chocolate Chip Dalmation Rescue League, German Shepherds from Mid-Atlantic GSD Rescue, and the other adoptable pups and dogs that came out to the event from Washington Animal Rescue League.

For all of you who bought our treats for the first time, we'd love to hear your dog's Tastemonials! Send us a Tastemonial and we'll post it on our website. Send a picture of your dog with your Tastemonial and we just might feature your dog in our monthly e-newsletter!

Hey evfurbody,
Just wanted to make a little PSA (that's "Public Service Announcement" not "Puppies (are) So Awesome" - the Julie-people says my version doesn't fit right anyway).

So I was taking my people for a walk this evening, just minding our own business and out of nowhere comes this little terrier running up after me. I sniffed and said "hi" like a polite doggie should, but then this little bugger just wouldn't go away. He followed us all the way home! And I wasn't so much a fan of that. This is MY people thanks, go find your own.

So we got home, and the little guy was running around like a crazy-dog up and down our street. My people brought me in the house and then went out again to try to catch that crazy little dog to see if she could help him find his home. But the little dog didn't have any tags on his nice leather collar! Why not? So my people put him on a leash and walked back through the neighborhood to where he found us, thinking that maybe someone would be looking for him around there.

And thank goodness there was a lady driving around in her car looking for him. "Iggy!" she called out when she saw him walking with my people. "He's notorious for getting out" she said. So my people said "You should probably get him a dog tag then."

Seriously, what if we hadn't been walking past when he got out? Anyone could have dognapped the little guy - or worse! And he was cute and all, but I kinda like being an "only dog" at my house, so it's a good thing my people found his people!

So to all you dogs out there, wear your dog tags! All the cool kids are doing it!

WooWoof! Is it as beautiful outside where the rest of you pups are as it is here in Maryland? The birds are signing, the snow is melting, and the dogs are out walking! Love is in the air - puppy love!

Valentine's Day is coming, too. My people says that Valentine's Day is a time to make sure that you show the people and pups in your life just how much they mean to you. Personally, I think that every day should be Valentine's Day - But I guess it really is Valentine's every day because I know that my people loves me every day, and I make sure to give them lots of kisses every day too.

The Bakery Goes to Baltimore - without me!

Me? Well I'll be home alone because my people are going to be selling our bakery treats at the SquidFire Winter Art Mart at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore. And they aren't bringing me. Um, hello? But no, I'll be at home. Perched on my couch looking out the window, watching the world go by. While my people will be having lots of fun selling lots of bones. You should go too, I hear it's going to be a great event ... if you're a people anyway.

Our friend, Fozzie

We just learned today that our friend Fozzie, a rescued shelter dog in Maine, has been hit by a car and ran off into the woods. His human-sister accidentally let him outside (and without his collar on) and he ran into the road and was hit. His family hasn't been able to find him yet, and he hasn't returned home. It's been several days now since this happened and his family is very sad and worried about him.

Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS) is our Charity of the Month for October. And, it just so happens, that BARCS is celebrating October with a BARCStoberfest this coming Saturday, Oct 18th in Patterson Park.

Let me tell ya pups, this BARCStoberfest thing sounds so super fun! First of all, there's a Strut-Your-Mutt March to raise funds for BARCS and their rescued animals. What pooch doesn't like a good walk? And a walk for a good cause? Even Better!

Secondly, there are going to be lots of fun events and activities there. Things like frisbee contests - I LOVE frisbees! Things like FREE TREATS - I love free treats! Things like Halloween costume contests - ok, I hate costumes, but they're ok for other doggies I guess.

And did I mention there'll be FREE TREATS there? And not just any treats - Love of Dog Bakery treats! Stop by the Ohmidog! booth at BARCStoberfest and get your free Love of Dog Bakery treats! Woof! Have you doggies been working hard trying to master this silly balance-a-treat-on-your-nose nonsense thing that the Julie-people came up with as part of our "Back to School Special"?

Well, I have and let me tell ya - I've had just about enough of that nonsense! She started by putting a piece of my food on my nose, figuring that it's smaller and thus taking minimal effort to balance it there. While we did make some progress to the point that I'll let her put the silly piece of food on my nose once or maybe twice I just think the whole ordeal is beyond ridiculous and so I give up and roll over on my side to make her stop. Seriously, how humiliating! We only tried it with a big treat once and I got tired of trying to balance it and just did "roll over" instead to see if that would get her to leave me alone. Let's see if she likes it if I make her balance an ice cream cone (a treat that the people likes) on her nose.

I quit! Have any of you doggies mastered this nonsense though? Send me a picture or an e-mail and tell me about your training tricks!

MCHS Strut Your Mutt

Today was the Annual "Strut Your Mutt" walk-a-thon at Marquette County Humane Society, our Charity of the Month! It was pretty wet and rainy here in Maryland, I sure hope they had better weather up in the U.P. of Michigan. My Julie-people kept checking their weather reports and it looked like maybe the rain was going to hold off till the late afternoon. Were any of you there? How'd it go? Tell me all about it, pups!

Don't forget about our "Back to School" free treat promotion! We haven't received any photos yet, and I know that somedoggie out there can balance a treat on their nose (or head)! My Julie-people and I have been working on it ourselves. She's been getting me to "balance" a piece of kibble on my nose to start, and I'm getting better at it. It's just so hard to have something yummy right there and have to wait for the "ok" to eat it. But it's fun to make the people happy and excited, so I'm trying. My Julie-people says I've done great so far, and she has high hopes that by the end of the month we'll be posting a picture of me balancing a Love of Dog Bakery treat on my nose. I'm really hoping I can post a picture of somedoggie else doing the same thing though - and you'll get a dozen free treats too! It's still early, start training!

My sister and I had set off on a great adventure one day at the very grown-up age of 6 weeks-old. This adventure involved being picked up and brought to Animal Control, waiting around in cages for 2 weeks (this was not part of our plan!), being rescued by the nice people at Animal Resource Network, Inc (ARNI) where we went to live with our foster-mom, Jean, for a few weeks. While living with Jean, we convinced her to take our pictures (beautiful girls like us needed some photoshoot time, ya know?). Well Jean took pictures of us and put them on this internet thing on a website called Petfinder where she proclaimed to the world what wonderful puppies we were.

One day the Julie-people saw my glamour shot on Petfinder and contacted Jean to arrange a time to come meet the infamous "Thelma" - Oh, I forgot to mention this part, Jean and the ARNI-people gave my sister & I new names. They called us "Thelma" & "Louise" because we'd been found wandering the side of a highway on this great adventure we'd set out on. I heard they made a movie about us crazy gals - gosh dog it, I keep forgetting to put that on my PetFlix list.

Well that day came, and let me tell ya, I wrapped them around my little curled tail and adopted the Julie & Rob-people that very day. The adventure continues! My new people gave me another new name, they called me Hayle, and they took me home with them. I missed my sister a little that first night, but my new people were so great and I heard that my sister adopted a new family that following weekend, so I was really happy about that.

I still remember the good people at ARNI though and my foster-mom, Jean. They were so good to us. That's why we made ARNI our Charity of the Month for June. Happy Adoption Anniversary to my ARNI friends! Thanks a bunch for everything!!!

Black is Beautiful

While nibbling on some Pumpkin Spice Bones and enjoying the fresh breeze coming through the open living room window, it occured to me that it would be lovely to have a coffee table book to browse through. Yup, that would surely make the moment all the more wonderful.

And so it is that my Julie-people and I have stumbled across
Black is Beautiful which is dedicated to the countless black beauty rescued mutts, such as myself. For each purchase of this book, the SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George's County, Maryland receives a $20 donation.

Black dogs are the most difficult for shelters to adopt out. For some silly reason, people tend to see us black beauties as being more aggressive, scarier, less of a family dog. How silly! I never understand why people tend to shy away from me when I'm walking my people down the sidewalk. They see "bad black dog with menacing white teeth" - bad? menacing? Look at this beautiful smile! My whole black body is wagging with excitement at the prospect of some lovin'.

Help us change this unfavorable public image of black dogs. We need families too! Buy this book. Share the love of dog.

Dogtown

So today I thought I'd write about my most favoritest TV show. And no, it's not American Idol or Stupid Pet Tricks. It's "Dogtown" on the National Geographic Channel. Dogtown is a show all about the place, Dogtown, at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah. Dogtown takes in hundreds, even thousands, of dogs each year. These doggies have it pretty ruff before they get to Dogtown. Often they've been abused or neglected. They might have horrible health problems, or even just simple health problems that nobody has bothered to treat or care for them before. The good people there make sure these homeless doggies get quality medical care and teach them how to trust people and make friends with other doggies. Dogtown even has 22 of the dogs rescued from that big dog fight ring that was broken up in Virginia, the "Vicktory Dogs" they call them.

I was a rescued pup myself (more on that next month) but I can't even begin imagine what these dogs have been through in their lives. I'm so glad that there are places out there like Dogtown - places with people who love dogs SO much that they give so much of themselves to make dogs' lives better. Best Friends is our Charity of the Month for May. They do so much, I just can't say enough about them. Don't believe me? Watch the show yourself. The three episodes that have been aired already are available to watch online, with five new episodes (including one about the "Vicktory Dogs") will air this summer.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Today is Earth Day, everydoggie! Here's a pup's perspective on "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" ...

REDUCE - Spay & Neuter for fewer homeless pets
REUSE - Adopt a shelter pet! Every doggie deserves a forever home.
RECYCLE - Hmmm, this one is a little harder. How about recycling the packing materials from your Love of Dog Bakery orders. At Love of Dog Bakery, all of our shipping materials are either reused - such as the packing peanuts (which, the people tell me are not peanuts like the ones that make tasty peanut butter, so please don't eat them!) or made from recyclable materials - like our shipping boxes, which are partially recycled already and then you can recycle them again yourself.

And here's another great suggestion this Earth Day - Have your people use 100% biodegradable/biocompostable poop bags, which are made of corn instead of plastic. My people buy them online at http://www.poopbags.com/. Do your part. No dog is too small to make a difference!

Mmmmm....Cheddar!

It's an oldie but goodie - the Beef & Cheddar Bones. My Julie-people was baking some earlier today so I figured I'd share with evfurbody what makes these bones so gosh-dog yummy. It's the cheese! Not just any cheese either - Cabbot Vermont Sharp Cheddar. Nuthin' but the best!

I love it when my Julie-people bakes these bones, ya know why? Because she's kinda messy in the kitchen. I sit patiently by her feet as she fresh grates the Vermont Sharp Cheddar because I just know that some of it is bound to end up on the floor. And sure enough, pups, it always does! Sometimes she'll even give me a small piece if it breaks off the block while she's grating. Mmmmmm....cheddar!

I just may have found myself a new boyfriend. A very handsome doggie by the name of Bramble e-mailed me today. And not only did he e-mail me, but he sent me a whole collage of pictures of himself, to show me just how very handsome he is. In fact, he looks a lot like me - we'd make beautiful puppies (if only I wasn't "fixed"). But alas, Bramble was writing to me from far away in London. My people says this is across the "big pond" - I say I could swim across any pond (I'm a very good swimmer, you know), but my people insists that this "big pond" is much bigger than any pond I've ever seen. Oh well. Perhaps a long distance love-affair?

Happy New Year to evfurbody! We were so so busy in December baking (and tasting!) bones for the holidays that I hardly had time to nap! It's been a busy week in the Love of Dog Bakery kitchen. My Julie-people has been trying out a new recipe for Pumpkin Bones. I've tasted several of them along the various product development stages and I think we've finally gotten it just right! Pumpkin is so yummy, folks! And the people says they smell good enough to eat (the people are silly, of course they are good enough to eat, what are they talking about?!) Anyway, our new Pumpkin Bones will be available for sale through our website soon. They come in a 2.25" bone shape, perfect for doggies of all sizes, $0.55 each or 10 for $5.00. First of all, I'd like to send a mastiff-sized THANK YOU to everydoggie (and their people) who have placed orders since the official launch of our website last weekend. It's been so Dog-gone exciting around here to see all those dog bone orders going out!! Although, it does make me a little sad to see the bones leave ... I try not to be selfish but they are just so yummy that I want them all to myself sometimes ... but it's okay because I know she'll bake more!

Anyway, I also wanted to write today to say that since I am such a V.I.P. (Very Important Pooch) at Love of Dog Bakery I now have my very own e-mail address just like my people. I'm still trying to figure out how e-mail really works. I mean, I'm all about checking my pee-mail throughout the neighborhood when I'm out on my daily walks, but e-mail seems a bit more complicated. For example, how does one "sniff" an e-mail? They all smell the same to me - how do you know who it's from? So my people are helping me out with this for now, till I get the hang of it anyway. So feel free to send me a pee-, er, I mean e-mail sometime ... I kinda need the practice. Well, I've gotta go run a Quality Control check on the Chicken & Parmesan bones that my Julie-people baked last night. Duty calls!

Woof Woof! It sure is Dogtastic to finally be launching our website at Love of Dog Bakery. My Julie-people has been busy baking bones – which means that my job as “Master Taste Tester Extraordinaire” has kicked into high gear. It’s a difficult job you know, but I don’t complain too much. The hardest part is when she bakes and bakes and bakes ALL those bones, and then my Quality-Control check is only like one or two of them. I mean, I’ve gotta be really sure they’re just right. I try to convince her to let me try more of them … just to be sure … but she’s pretty convinced when I lick the carpet for every last little crumb that they are fit for sale. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them. More later!
